The Information Security Society of Africa – Nigeria (ISSAN) has advocated for enhanced collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to bolster efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s cyberspace against internet fraud and financial crimes.
Dr. Martin Ikpehai, Vice President of ISSAN, made the call during a visit to the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 10, 2024. He emphasized the need for a sustainable approach to tackling cybercrimes and applauded the EFCC’s efforts in combating digital crimes.
“Now, every business is conducted in the digital space, and criminals are chasing them online. We are happy with the EFCC’s work in fighting cybercrimes, but there should be synergy between our organization and the EFCC,” Dr Ikpehai stated.
Expressing concern over the proliferation of “yahoo schools” across the country, Dr. Ikpehai highlighted the importance of collaboration between ISSAN and the EFCC to address this issue effectively.
“Cybersecurity is crucial, and ISSAN offers a platform to educate Nigerians, including students, about cyber threats and how to defend against them,” he added, commending the EFCC’s Eagle Eye app for its role in combating internet fraud.
In response, Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, acknowledged ISSAN’s efforts and emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating cybercrimes.
“We have to engage all stakeholders and ensure that we take drastic measures to stop criminals in cyberspace. The more we come together, the better for the country to prosecute the war on cybercrime and security,” Olukoyede affirmed.
He reassured that the EFCC would remain proactive in staying ahead of cybercriminals, emphasizing the need for a technology-driven approach in combating technology-driven crimes.
