Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates clinched victory in the chairmanship positions across 33 local government areas of Oyo State, as announced by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) on Sunday, following the council poll held on Saturday, April 27.
While the PDP celebrated its triumph, the African Action Congress (AAC) state chapter vehemently rejected the election results, accusing both the state electoral body and the PDP of orchestrating what they termed “a show of shame and a monumental electoral heist.”
In a statement on Sunday, Kayode Babayomi, the State AAC Chair, decried the alleged irregularities, violence, and intimidation witnessed during the electoral process. Babayomi asserted, “We observed serious delays in the distribution of voting materials, deliberate misplaced materials, the mobilization of PDP thugs to intimidate voters, and the undue influence of security operatives.”
Babayomi further lamented the physical assault and unlawful detention of the AAC chairman and other party members, along with disruptions in several wards allegedly orchestrated by PDP thugs. He accused the OYSIEC chairman, Isiaka Olagunje, of colluding with the Makinde government, compromising the integrity of the electoral process.
“We declare that there was no election, but rather a coordinated effort to subvert the democratic process,” Babayomi emphasized, calling for the immediate cancellation of the poll and the scheduling of a new date for a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

The AAC’s rejection of the election results underscored their call for accountability and transparency within the electoral system. They urged all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure the integrity of future electoral processes in Oyo State.
The dispute over the council poll results highlights the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral system, as political parties contend with allegations of irregularities and electoral malpractices. As tensions escalate between the PDP and the AAC, the credibility of OYSIEC and the integrity of the electoral process hang in the balance.
