The Girls of St. John Vianney Science College in Igbariam, Anambra State, has emerged victorious in the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024 championship title with their groundbreaking virtual reality project, M-Tag VR, triumphing on Wednesday.
Organized by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the competition aims to foster technological innovation among secondary school girls nationwide.
M-Tag VR, the brainchild of students Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, under the mentorship of coach John Onuigbo, immerses users in virtual experiences exploring iconic landmarks like Zuma Rock while delving into the rich cultural tapestry of Nigerian tribes.

From the outset, the girls showcased their prowess by clinching victory at the state level, emerging champions of the Anambra State competition. They subsequently blazed through the South-Eastern regional championship, besting teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu states, to secure a spot in the national finals.
Impressing judges with their exceptional project and technical acumen, the St. John Vianney Science College team emerged victorious in a tightly contested national finale, prevailing over formidable contenders from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
Reflecting on the team’s exhilarating victory, Immaculate Ikegwuonu remarked that:
“We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school which motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”
Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, Director of St. John Vianney Science College, lauded the historic achievement, affirming the school’s unwavering commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields. Highlighting the school’s dedication to nurturing technological innovation among its students, Fr Obimma noted that: “This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride. Idika Ukpai, Operations Lead of Kodex Africa, underscored the significance of the National Girls in ICT Competition in fostering technological innovation among Nigerian youth. Kodex Africa, through its implementing hubs in each state, provided logistical support to ensure a seamless competition process.
Ukpai commended the St. John Vianney Science College team from Anambra State for their remarkable achievement, underscoring the transformative impact of initiatives that empower young women in the ICT sector.
“This victory is a testament to the dedication and talent of these young girls. We are glad to have been part of their journey. They have not only showcased their technical skills but also their ability to innovate and problem-solve,” concluded Fr. Obimma, echoing sentiments of pride and admiration for the victorious team.
