Jose Mourinho has claimed that Manchester United failed to offer him the same level of support they are currently providing to Erik ten Hag.
Mourinho, who managed the club from 2016 to 2018, believes that with more backing, he could have achieved greater success during his tenure.
During his time at Old Trafford, Mourinho led Manchester United to Europa League and Carabao Cup victories, along with a second-place finish in the Premier League. However, his tenure came to an abrupt end in December 2018 following a Premier League defeat to Liverpool.
Reflecting on his departure, Mourinho expressed his disappointment with the lack of professional support he received, contrasting it with the support Ten Hag is currently enjoying.

He stated, “I am who I am. I am a football man. Ed comes from a different background and what Ten Hag has in his time at Manchester United I didn’t have.”
Mourinho also highlighted his strained relationship with certain players during his time at the club. The players included Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, and Bastian Schweinsteiger. While many of these players have since left, some, like Martial and Shaw, remain on United’s roster.
Although Mourinho did not mention names, he criticized the professionalism of some players, stating, “There are still a couple of players still there I didn’t want five or six years ago. I think they represent a little bit of what I consider not the best professional profile for a club of a certain dimension.”
Looking ahead, there are rumors that Ten Hag could return to his former club, Ajax, for the 2024-25 season if he departs from United. Meanwhile, United is reportedly exploring managerial options in the market and has been linked to current Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, who will be available this summer.
