The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved that Umar Damagum, the current acting National Chairman, will continue in his role until the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled after today’s session on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
This decision emerged from the PDP caucus meeting held on Wednesday night, where key issues were discussed.
According to PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, the caucus decided to reconstitute all reconciliation committees of the party to address grievances affecting the party’s unity. When asked about the party’s chairmanship position, Ologunagba stated that it would be discussed at the NEC meeting.
However, the caucus resolved that Damagum will remain chairman until the next NEC meeting after today’s session.
Notable attendees at the meeting included former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar. Damagum, suspected to be an ally of Wike, serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The caucus also directed the party to reconsider the Rivers State Caretaker Committee List and seek a political solution to the crisis in the state. This decision reflects ongoing efforts within the PDP to address internal conflicts and strengthen party unity.
The caucus meeting took place less than 24 hours before the NEC meeting of the party, scheduled for today. The NEC meeting aims to discuss issues regarding the party’s leadership and rectify decisions made by various party organs.
The PDP is grappling with a leadership crisis, with some members calling for the resignation of the Damagum-led NEC. To address these challenges, meetings such as the NEC and the party’s Board of Trustees have been convened.
Recall that Damagun emerged as a caretaker chairman of the PPD after the former chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, was suspended by the the executive committee of the PDP in Igyorov ward in the Gboko Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Although he initially challenged his removal in court, Ayu has now withdrawn his appeal, a decision believed to be linked to the upcoming National Executive Meeting.
