A 103-year-old woman from Tanzania, Mariam Hussein, has shared the touching story of her lifelong love for a white European man named John, whom she hoped to reunite with but never saw again.
In an interview with Afrimax’s English anchor Simon Greenwood, Hussein recounted her emotional journey. She said that she met John when he came to Tanzania seeking adventure.
“I met John, a young white man from Europe who had come to Tanzania in search of adventure and purpose. I helped him settle in and over time, our friendship grew into a deep and loving relationship. He was kind, respectful, and genuinely interested in my life and culture,” Hussein said.
Hussein described how their bond grew stronger as they spent time together.
“We shared dreams and hopes for a future filled with love and happiness. He showed me affection and commitment, and I believed he was the one who could change my life for the better,” she explained.

Despite their deep connection, John had to leave suddenly without a word of farewell.
“I was devastated when he left. I searched everywhere for him, hoping he would return as he promised. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and eventually years, but he never came back,” Hussein recalled.
Hussein remained hopeful and faithful to her cultural values, staying celibate and believing that one day John would return.
“Even though I loved him deeply, I kept my promise to my culture to remain pure until marriage. I hoped that one day we would marry and that my patience would be rewarded,” she said.
As the years passed, Hussein’s hopes began to fade, but she remained steadfast in her commitment to John and her cultural beliefs.
“Though the pain of his absence never fully left me, I stayed true to my values and cherished the memories we shared,” she added.
